Bozeman Summer Hiking Series - Drinking Horse Mountain

Entering Trail from the Bozeman Fish Hatchery

The second installment of my Bozeman Summer Hiking Series is Drinking Horse Mountain, a nice 2.5 mile loop that begins from the parking lot of the Bozeman Fish Hatchery on Bozeman's north side just before entering into Bridger Canyon.  Consequently, the Hatchery has its own interpretive trail that is also worth checking out if you are looking for something fun and interesting for the family to do.

Views from Drinking Horse

My family and some good friends of ours with younger children started our trek up just after 5pm.  We took the more gradual of the two routes to the top to facilitate our stroller and 3 & 4 year olds who were insistent on hiking the whole way up.  We completed the approximately 1.2 mile stretch in just over an hour while gaining approximately 700 ft. of elevation along the way.  Views of the Gallatin Valley and Bridger Canyon were phenomenal from the top and after a short stop over at the picnic area we began our descent to beat the rain clouds rolling in back to our car.

Kevin Mundy Memorial Bridge over Bridger Creek

We stopped for a short while on the Kevin Mundy Memorial Bridger that crosses over Bridger Creek on the way to and from the trail to wait out a bit of the rain.  All told, the hike took our families about an 1:45 from car to peak to car.  The kids did great overall, there were a few slips and about a half-dozen total tears, but an overwhelming success of an outing.  This is a hike that we will do again with our family and worth checking out if you have not yet been on it with yours.

All best,
