The number of July visitors to Yellowstone National Park topped 900,000 for only the third time in the park's history this year, the National Park Service said Thursday.

The park had 906,935 visitors last month, the second-highest monthly total ever recorded. The total is down from July 2010, which set the single-month record at 957,785.

Yellowstone recorded 1,848,658 recreational visitors from January to July of this year. That's about 163,000 fewer visitors than the same time period in 2010, which was a record year.
